Nigeria closed out the Grammy Awards 2026 without taking home a trophy, despite earning multiple high-profile nominations across major African and global music categories. Expectations were high going into the ceremony, but the night ultimately ended in disappointment for Nigerian music fans.
Top Nigerian artistes, including Burna Boy, Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid, were all nominated at the Grammy Awards but failed to secure a win. Their nominations highlighted Nigeria’s continued dominance in African pop and Afrobeats, yet the results underscored how competitive the global stage has become.
In the Grammy category for Best African Music Performance, South African singer Tyla emerged victorious with her song Push 2 Start. She edged out strong contenders such as Burna Boy’s Love, With You by Davido featuring Omah Lay, and Gimme Dat by Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid, sealing another major milestone in her fast-rising career.
This victory marked Tyla’s second Grammy win in the category since it was introduced in 2024. She previously made history as the first-ever recipient with her global hit Water, further solidifying her influence within African music on the world stage.
Meanwhile, the Grammy for Best Global Music Album went to Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia for Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo. Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness missed out, adding to Nigeria’s overall tally of near-misses at the ceremony.
The 2026 Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles, United States, and organised by the Recording Academy. While Nigeria walked away without a win, the breadth of nominations once again reinforced the country’s undeniable presence and growing impact in global music.
